The Lifeworks Way

Meet Trina James

After working as an advocate for families and children for more than 20 years, Trina James decided she wanted return to direct care work. She found the right fit at Lifeworks.

The Challenge

As a caregiver at a group home in her early 20s, Trina James was passionate about her work. Ultimately, she made the decision to transition to social services as an advocate for families and children – and did so happily for more than 20 years.

But after deciding she wanted return to direct care work, finding the right fit took center stage at this point in her career.

The Process

Initially, she was offered positions with Lifeworks in Eagan and Apple Valley, but turned them down because of her desire to work closer to her home in Hennepin County.

So when she got a call offering her a position at Lifeworks Brooklyn Park – a much shorter commute – she happily accepted.

Though initially hired as a service specialist, she was promoted to service facilitator within four months and accepted a position as a job coach just two months later.

“I’m always willing to learn new things and bring them to life and Lifeworks allows me to express myself and not bottle up all this personality I have,” James said.

The Outcome

Today, after receiving yet another promotion, she serves as a career placement counselor – a position that allows her to work closely with individuals with disabilities and help them realize their own career aspirations.

“I have seen so many chances and opportunities for people to advance within the agency,” James said. “Not only myself, but co-workers that started before and after me.”

With a willingness to listen to employee concerns and encourage open, honest dialogue, Lifeworks has been an ideal fit for her.

“I like the fun we have with staff events and how each person has their own little thing that we connect with, whether it’s our grandchildren, hobbies, travel, and most importantly, food,” James said.

I have seen so many chances and opportunities for people to advance within the agency.
