The Lifeworks Way

Meet Nick Milligan

Nick Milligan first joined the Lifeworks team as a direct support professional in 2013. At the time, he hoped it would open the door to greater possibilities for his career. By 2014, he realized his aspirations and accepted a position in the IT department, receiving multiple promotions along the way.

The Challenge

Before he was hired by Lifeworks, Nick Milligan was a direct support professional with extensive experience working with individuals with disabilities of various ages.

Despite a love for hands-on work, his aspirations were greater: he hoped to become an information technology professional. Joining the Lifeworks team in 2013 was a pivotal moment in helping his dreams become a reality.

The Process

Initially, Milligan was hired as a service specialist – a direct care position where he became a technology lab instructor. Within a year, he applied for and was hired as a client technology specialist – his first official IT position!

“I was actually not looking to get out of the human services field, but move to a more administrative standpoint,” Milligan said. “You work direct service for so long, that’s all you know. And that’s good because you’re with that person every day, you know everything about them, you know everything about your caseload.”

Although the transition from a direct care employee to a more behind-the-scenes supporter wasn’t without its share of challenges, Milligan has been successful with the support of his co-workers and the trust that Lifeworks has placed in him.

The Outcome

Two years after he first joined the Lifeworks IT team, Milligan received two promotions just a month apart: first to become a technical support specialist and finally as infrastructure security specialist.

“The ability to be flexible and be more independent in my career and my work here has been huge – something I haven’t experienced with a lot of companies,” Milligan said.

Since he has achieved his initial goal of breaking into the information technology field, Milligan said he continues to work hard to expand his knowledge every day, with the support of Lifeworks.

“Lifeworks as a company has some of the most incredibly dedicated and talented staff,” Milligan said. “I feel like there can be room for advancement and my experience working here has been extremely accommodating.”
